Sundarban-Source of Natural Honey
When talking about pure honey, the first name that comes to mind is Sundarbans honey. Sundarbans honey is completely natural honey. Sundarbans honey has a different demand for honey lovers.
Sundarban Honey Collection :
Hundreds of thousands of people in the villages around the Sundarbans earn their livelihood by collecting forest honey. Nowhere else in the world is honey collected with such risk of life. Sundarbans is home to the world famous Royal Bengal Tiger. It is also home to venomous snakes and saltwater crocodiles. Overcoming all obstacles, the Mouals rushed to the forest to collect honey. Bees make hives on the branches of tall trees. Breaking chak from these tall trees is quite a difficult task. Even if you go for a walk in the forest, you have to be careful.
Time Duration of Honey Collection in Sundarban :
Basically every year in the middle of the month of April, the forest department allows honey extraction in the Sundarbans. However, due to climate change over the past few years, Khalishaful has started blooming a little earlier in the Sundarbans. On that occasion, the forest department started granting permission to go to the forest in mid-March in view of the complaints that the fishermen were going to the forest with permission to fish before the mouals were cutting chak from the forest.
Honey collectors in Sundarbans have to undergo various training. A fine is levied if a bee is injured or killed while collecting honey. Forest entry is allowed from various ranges of Sundarbans in mid-March. Collecting honey from forest is becoming difficult day by day. Earlier, one and a half to two kilometers in the forest could get honey, but now even if you walk a few kilometers, you can’t find chak. There is a high risk of tiger attacks in the deep forests. Moreover, incense is burnt to repel bees during chak cutting. The smell of that smell often brings tigers. Collecting wax, honey, wood in the Sundarbans is called Bada cutting by the locals. The father lost his life in a tiger attack while cutting pada. After a few years, his son also died in a tiger attack while cutting Bada. It is a common occurrence in the villages around Sundarbans.
Honey Production is Decreasing Day By Day:
Sundarbans honey is number one in the list of honey lovers, but getting honey in the forest is becoming difficult day by day. Honey is less available in the forest for the past few years. According to the information of the Forest Department, in 2021, 1050 quintals of honey were obtained from the East Sundarbans, but in 2022, it decreased to 654 quintals.
Reasons for decreaseing Honey in Sundarban:
One of the reasons for the decrease in honey production is the decrease in the number of bees in the forest. Due to lack of sufficient rain, the number of honey and bees is decreasing day by day. However, the Mouals think that the water is poisoned during indiscriminate fishing in the Sundarbans. The poison also penetrated into the mud. Bees need mud when making their wheels. As a result, many bees die from a reaction to the poison while collecting the mud. Not only the bees but also the people of the villages around the Sundarbans depend on the rainwater. Because there is a shortage of fresh water. As there is brackish water all around, they collect enough rainwater during the rainy season to consume that water throughout the year.
Types of Sudarban Natural Honey :
There are only a handful of types of honey available in the Sundarbans. They are Khalisha honey, Garan honey, Bain-Garan mixed honey, Gewur honey, Keora and Ora honey and mixed flower honey. Sundarbans honey is completely natural, so how can you tell which is the honey of which flower? The answer is that during the season when the flowers bloom in the forest, the honey is available in the forest. Moreover, from their long experience, the mouals can understand which is the honey of which flower by looking at the scent and color of the honey. From the end of Chaitra, the season of obtaining honey in the forest begins. The first honey found in the forest is Khalisha flower honey. The scent of Khalisha flower is so sweet that bees come from far and wide to collect its honey. Then there are Bine-Garan Mixed, Garan, Geua and at the very end Mishraful, Keora and Ora Madhu are available.
Honey is most available in the forest during the monsoon season. Honey is less available in the forest at the end of monsoon. And honey is hardly available in the forest in winter. But the interesting thing is that honey is most in demand in winter.
Way of Recognize Verious Kinds of Sundarban Natural Honey :
Honey of various flowers is available in Sundarbans but the most delicious honey is Khalisha flower honey. Its taste is completely different from other honey. It is said that he who has once eaten the honey of the Khalisha flower does not like any other honey in his mouth. It looks different from other honey. It is a little white. A little darker than other honeys. But at the beginning of the year, the honey of the first Khalisha flower is red in color. Note that Sundarbans honey is a little thin. Khalisha flower honey is usually available during the three months of Chaitra to Jaishtya. This honey is preserved throughout the year.
Sundarbans Khalisha flower honey has established a reputation for itself, but all the honeys available in Sundarbans are incomparable in count, value and taste. Every honey is delicious to eat. And they have various medicinal properties. The most popular and tastiest of the Sundarbans honeys is Khalisha, but the Bine-Garan mixed honey is superior in terms of quality. If you consider the benefits of honey, the benefits of Bine-Gran mixed honey are more. This honey is not white like khalisa honey but has a reddish color. Bine-garan mixed honey is comparatively a little thinner than Khalisha honey. But the taste is almost close to Khalisha honey. Garan honey is also very white. But it is a little thinner than Khalishaful honey. Gewar honey is very reddish in smell and taste a little bitter and thin. The honey color of Keora and Ora is also white. They are also thinner but Ora honey is slightly whiter than Keora honey. The honey color of mixed flowers is slightly red and relatively thin. But this honey has a special feature and that is the sweetness of this honey. If you eat mixed flower honey, you will feel that its sweetness is perfect, not a little more, not a little less.
As the years go by, the colors of all honeys change a little. But honey stays good for years.
